Prof. Dr. João A. Frayze-Pereira

  • João A. Frayze-Pereira is psychoanalyst, full member and training analyst of the Brazilian Psychoanalytic Society of São Paulo – SBPSP / IPA. 
  • He teaches at the SBPSP psychoanalytic training program and is the founder and coordinator of the SBPSP Aesthetics-Art-Psychoanalysis Study Group. 
  • He is the editor of IDE – Psychoanalysis and Culture, a journal published by the SBPSP.
  • He runs a private practice on psychoanalytic clinic in São Paulo, since 1980.
  • He is a full professor of Social Psychology at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil, since 1971, at the Social Psychology Department, and at the Post-graduate Studies Program on Aesthetics and Art History at the Contemporary Art Museum (USP), since 2006, coordinating researches on Psychoanalysis and Art Criticism. 

     

  • He graduated and received his MD (1979) and Ph.D.(1987) in Psychology from USP, and later received a post-doctorate degree in Aesthetics from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, in Paris (1997-2000) under the supervision of Professor Jacques Leenhardt.  
  • In 2000, he received the academic title of “Professor livre docente” (Privatdozent” – “Adjunct professor” – “Libera docenza) from USP.

     

  • His research interests include psychoanalysis, art criticism and the social psychology of arts, with a focus on the following themes: clinical experience and art; forms of the aesthetic experience; the aesthetic perspective in the psychoanalytic clinical treatment ; the aesthetics of reception in the context of exhibitions of modern and contemporary art; psychoanalysis and the phenomenology of the works of art. 
  • He is a full member of the Association Internationale des Critiques d’Art (AICA) and of the Brazilian Association of Art Critics (ABCA).
